Cinematic electro

Sounding very much like a soundtrack for the most part, Metamorfozy's new cinematic-electro record mixes the usual loops and beats with some lovely soundscapes. 'Of A Time Passed By' for example sounds exactly like a refrain of the love theme from "Bladerunner" (by Vangelis); this tune and the opener and closer 'Bright Leaves' and 'Here The Woods Stand Silent', along with 'Theme From Metamorfozy' stand out as some of the best tracks on the record; soothing, ethereal and moving, they are quintessentially cinematic and dreamy in tone.

Unfortunately you are thrown out of the dream state and into euro-electro mode with the cheesy 'Towlines' ruining the mood totally, the vocals on this track let the side down and make you think they should definitely stick to the instrumentals. A touch of piano and some OK vocal harmonies on 'In Those Breaths' go some way to salvaging the record and try to bring back the lovely atmosphere created in the opening two tracks.

Many of the tracks on the record have that 'where have I heard that before' feel to them but most of the time you can't quite pinpoint the tune it reminds you of which can be frustrating. 'Haksedans' is one such track; however it's also pretty good with strong female vocals wailing away in the background.

Overall the album is a little hit and miss, the male vocals often ruin the mood, aside from the Barry Adamson-esque 'Formidable' where they work quite well. The instrumentals are far and away the most enjoyable tracks; they are often genuinely lovely with that expansive, cinematic feel (from 'Revada' on the album flows nicely until the end). It's just a shame it's not all like that.
