Eloquent offerings
London based poets Villette release a demo that's refined, eloquent and brims with ebullience. 'Drama Girl' starts off this trio of slick songs with its catchy, balmy verses, lingering breathless lyrics expelled through epical vocals and a bass line so fluid that it could drown. It's perhaps the most instantly accessible tune on the demo, so compared to the depth of Villette's other tracks, for a moment it feels a little too poppy, however 'Drama Girl' is a definite grower and the fact it even includes a suave guitar solo redeems it infinitely.
'Devotion' instantly fills you with the lithe energy of the rhythm section, but once you've got beyond shimmying to the tune, the effortlessly eloquent lyrics will be sure to stun, "The dawn aches; I'll make it through this one/With dust as a dancer held in amber". The eerie bass line hums away in the background as the guitar work offsets it beautifully with a chiming melody.
'Something Real' acts as the experienced, crowd-pleasing tune as it's managed to find a place on both Villette's demos. This may seem a little strange, but it's a fabulous, frenetic masterpiece of overlapping harmonies and folk vigour. It's a song that begs you to let go and be submerged in its blinding vigour.
London is a veritable goldmine of obscure bands but I'm betting Villette are at least the most eloquent out there, if not one of the most passionate and captivating. Their music conveys a delightful romanticism; Villette could be to literature what Morrissey was to social commentary and you can't get finer homage than that.
