Maybe isn't really a compliment.

The Maybes? is a rather vague name for a band but there is no doubt where the bands allegiances lie as their debut ep, 'Olympia' is as basic and old-fashioned rock n roll as it comes. For those of you who like the idea of Jet but perhaps find them a bit too original and modern in their thinking, then this could be the band for you.

Clearly the band think of themselves in the classic mould of bands like Led Zeppelin and certainly Nick Ellis's vocals do have a yelp about them but they sound better suited to a tribute act, as opposed to a new band.

Opener 'Rock n Roll' not only blatantly shows its hand with its title but manages to be an opening statement about life on the dole and local surroundings, its not rocket science or very memorable. The band sounds as though they are enjoying themselves but sonically it's a bit of a mess.

The next track is a step in the right direction as 'Actions' nicks its intro from The Monkees and touches on 60s psychedelic and power pop with the outro leaning on The Who's 'I can see for miles.' As influences go, the band could be paying homage to a lot of poorer bands but you get the feeling of what is the point of it all?

Theres nothing really bad here (although 'Get on the resin' is a bit weak) but down to the harmonicas, the singer sounding in pain as if to prove he is a proper artist and just a complete sensation of its all been done before, there is little to get excited about.

Its possible that in the live arena that The Maybes? are a better proposition and would probably make an evening go with a swing but for a debut record, it doesn't sell the band or impress enough as they would like.
