Answers on Postcards EP
Like most promising bands, Answers On Postcards capture that quirky, naïve frivolity to their somewhat rudimentary indie pop songs quite well. Their effervescence may take them places but not very far. Whilst their playing cannot be faulted they can surely do better than simple enough refrains repeated over and over again. By the middle of opening track What Did I Do the repetition of hearing the song title begins to grate. More merry stop-start guitar follows in Back Down To Earth, alas, so does the lack of lyrical inspiration.
Drums ignite Move On until a rasping guitar quickly intervenes though the enthusiasm soon wears off and the track almost sounds hungover with appropriate mentions of still being ‘wrapped up in bed’. The malaise that has tarnished the EP continues as the chorus has now become dreaded, rightly so when it‘s repeated just the 16 times. The final track, Don’t Come Running, seems to redeem the EP. First instances of a linting guitar provide salvation and prove that they can do subtle after all.
The question remains, can they come up with a decent set of lyrics? Answers On Postcards, please.
