Summertime

As the nights begin to draw in, what is your lasting impression of Summertime? Those gorgeous days spent in the sunshine, getting away from it all for a week or two, weddings, barbeques, endless afternoons spent watching international football tournaments perhaps? Heady revelry spent with your mates and the latest single from The Maybes? typify those memories with their own ode to that spiffing time of the year.

Liverpool has acquired an enviable reputation for producing assured, catchy pop down the years and this is no exception. Such illustrious confidence bristles amongst jubilant vocals with a classic 60s pop chorus indicate a likening to, if anyone, The Who. Somehow the song maintains the same high tempo throughout, leaving a glorious anthemic euphoria in its wake. The production values may be lacklustre, lending a makeshift rough demo sound. Surprising when you discover that the man behind the mixing desk is an internationally revered producer such as Head, yet even with those handicaps you simply cannot fault their enthusiasm.

There is a certain panache that only a few bands will ever possess, that rises them above contemporaries who aim for the mediocre. There is no maybe about it here, brisk and bright indie pop has never seemed to come this easy.
