Alan Semerdjian - The Big Beauty

The Big Beauty is a quirky brand of alternative that is definitely individual. Alan Semerdjian is better known for fronting 1990s band, Surreal, but this solo offering surely encompasses musical talent. Charming lyrics and beautiful harmonies glide through what is a delicious album, with songs ranging from the up-tempo dance pop of 'I Can’t Tell You How' to the melodic ballad of 'Halo'; each with an added helping of relaxation and a ray of sunshine. Throughout the album the, somewhat crooned, vocals are rather impressive, there is nothing too distinct about them yet they are the kind of vocals you could just listen to all day long.

This latest offering from Alan Semerdjian opens with the elegant 'Your Love', a song with distinct melodies and an arrangement you will not be able to get out of your head. Following this a few songs on is the stunning love story of emotionally unstable relationships, 'Bad Dreams'. This song clearly illustrates the talent and impressiveness of what he does, with flawless vocals and incredible lyrics; it is a song packed full of emotion. There are also other influences prominent throughout 'The Big Beauty' with jazz variations prominent in 'Melody' and folk influences throughout 'Everything (She’s Still The Best)'. For what is deemed to be a musically serious album, track 9, 'Stephanie' is a lyrically surprising song with lines that will be sure to put a smile on your face.

With members of bands such as Spin Doctors, The Hold Steady and Wheatus among those to feature or help produce this album; it is clear there is an impressive array of talent on 'The Big Beauty'. Alan Semerdjian is widely acclaimed as an artist and from this album it is rather evident why, he defies the desire to fit into what the music market desires and creates a musically beautiful album. There is nothing radical about it, nothing too outspoken and nothing too different, yet it is tasteful; an album oozing charm and lyrical genius which is just beautiful. There could not be a more perfect name for this album.
