Dirty Girl

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then the sleaziest 80s rock n roll acts must be feeling pretty well of themselves. For Velvet Star, their new single ‘Dirty Girl’ cannot even considered as an homage to the dirty guitar licks of the likes of The Cult and Guns n Roses, more like plain reproduction.

The opening riffs are promising, slick and ballsy with just a hint of overkill, but then you hear Danny’s somewhat try hard vocals and any respectability is suddenly foregone. Sure, the 80’s were not renowned for memorable lyrics but leave a testosterone addled teenager in a room with a notepad and late-night Sky TV then results would surely improve. Such a shame when the backing band provide a sterling effort with a tight yet formidable din, smattered with the occasional reputable guitar solo.

‘Give In To Me’ somehow manages to induce some well maintained excitement with a more restrained, contained sound which hints at some expert Guitar Hero practise. While ‘Rockstar/Superstar’ casts a vengeful if jealous eye at certain Hollywood celebrities launching music careers, the track provides proof that Velvet Star have been paying attention to the antics of 21st century superstardom, even if they seem set in the 80's
