Wired up
‘Bees’ and ‘Super Lovely Modern Sadness’ showcase this Portuguese Trio’s ambitions perfectly. Both tunes are loaded with experimental tendencies; prog, fuzzy indie and heavy rock all fight for leverage but somehow manage to maintain cohesion. They even pull off a great snippet of melody here and there like the catchy vocal line on ‘Super Lovely...’ which is a real sing-along moment.
These are bold, quirky, angry, tuneful but uplifting songs; take the slow climb to a spine-tingling cacophony of fuzzy guitars on ‘Super Lovely...’, the indie shimmer at the start of ‘Bees’, the heavy guitars and off kilter rhythms, very direct vocals and a spacey-prog feel running throughout. All things that many bands adopt, but few are brave enough to bring together. Chemical Wire mash it all up seemingly with ease and create some interesting, quirky tunes with solid, melodic foundations. A real gem of a single.
