Indie duo Grand Duchy is husband and wife Black Francis and Violet Clark, ‘Seeing Stars’ has a familiar twang; the melody and guitar sound hark back to Francis Pixies days in some ways and Clark’s vocal delivery is not a million miles away from Kim Deal. The single is dreamy and languid, fuzzy, distortion on the guitar, minimal drums, and to flesh it out a bit, synth whooshes around behind it all. B-side, ‘Fete Nationale’, is much more experimental and abstract, especially towards the end; the synths are more prevalent, the wordless vocals are “Nahs” and the melody often becomes off key. The tunes on both tracks are very sweet and gently quirky but beyond that they don’t make a great deal of an impression. An Interesting experiment but forgotten as soon as it’s finished playing.
