Sheffield 5-piece offer their rock and roll debut

StoneRun are a Sheffield 5-piece with a fantastic line in feel-good rock and roll. They have, so far, released two EPs and this is the first of those two, although the difference between the titles and packaging is negligible.

Despite only being created in 2009, StoneRun are already creating a name for themselves as energetic performers and purveyors of dynamic rock. 'Second Skin' is a choppy cross between Pearl Jam and The Black Crowes with hints of 80s metal in the guitar work. It's not all-guns-blazing but has a soulful, slow-burn appeal without being complicated or self-satisfied.

'Broken Promise' delivers the same catchy riffage and powerful drive. It's good to see the band work as a team, with no one instrument in the spotlight all the time. Even the vocals blend in well, creating a unified sound. 'Don't Blame Yourself' is along the same lines, with stripped-down verses and blasting choruses. They are fond of the broken-down middle eight, which adds depth and harmonies to otherwise simple songs, but doesn't seem too far removed from the all-out choruses.

'Into The Ground' offers a dirtier riff and harder edge to the guitar tone, but there are a lot of vocals that crowd the instrumentation. The track hints at trying to vary their sound, which is rarely a bad thing but in reality doesn't move too far away from their tried-and-tested blueprint.

StoneRun have a fantastic modern rock sound that would translate well in a live arena. Adding a bit more variation in their sound is probably the way forward, but it's an extremely solid foundation they have to build on. Keep an eye on these guys.
