Surprise Fire review

'Boxer' is the lead track of "Anything", the second EP from York five piece, Surprise Fire. The band have been tipped to go places by their local press and by some music journalists; and even featured on BBC Radio 6. So they clearly have been making inroads.

While 'Boxer' and the other two tracks that feature on the EP do resemble decent songs the slightly wooly production EP hinders them. The vocals are considerably more coherent than the instruments being played on the tracks, which sound like they're chained up in the corner.

The press have commented about the noise these fellas can make when playing live, but 'Boxer' and the other tracks on the EP sadly don't reflect this.

But the song is certainly good enough to be salvaged. The drumming is reminiscent of the drumming by Simon Neil on Biffy Clyro's first album, "Joy, Discovery, Invention". The guitar playing is also particularly strong, but during the production they seemed to be mixed quite low in volume.

Surprise Fire will no doubt get their opportunity. They just need to get everything polished up with bells on and more people will take notice.
