The Briefs

Along their re-issue of ‘Hit after Hit’ and countless tours supporting some of the greatest punk bands to walk the earth including Flogging Molly, Lars Fedriksen and the Bastards and The Queers, The Briefs release their third full length named ‘Sex Objects’ on BYO records. As rightly claimed in my other review The Briefs continue their handsome sound without maturing or burning out.

The Briefs latest offering is 16 tracks long. Each song, Par one, are all under 3 minutes meaning you won’t get bored so easily and the long list of songs available on CD gives the band a wide range of songs to choose on their live sets. From the ravaging ‘Destroy the USA’ to the more dramatic ‘Killed By Ants’ this CD certainly contains a slightly wider variety in tone but the band still carry that home-made sound that is well tailored to their style which proves critical for any bands who release a storming debut album.

The band continue to share vocal duties on this album as they have on previous releases, this maybe why the band have been ale to retain that fresh sound since the whole band have been able to share a constant flow of ideas. There has been a slight turn in lyrical content in songs such as ‘No More Presidents’ and ‘Antisocial’ the band have focused on the politics in today’s world. Maybe this was intentional to tie in with the 2004 presidential elections.

This album is still worthy of being a Briefs release but in comparison to older full lengths, it’s not as strong as ‘Hit After Hit’ and doesn’t produce the same classics. Still a good release.

It’s best said that The Briefs are like a big jar of Marmite, you either love or hate them. This month they are touring the UK in support of Flogging Molly. If you can, try to catch their live performance to fully experience their the power that they produce. Don’t forget to pick up a CD while you are there.
