Something Simple - Demo CD 1

It’s always nice to hear an unsigned band producing a sound that’s a little different from the standard ‘friendly’ rock music typically associated with young, amateur bands. A listen to Something Simple’s self-titled EP certainly brings a smile to the face in this respect, containing as it does six gorgeously refreshing tracks with shades of jazz, funk and blues. It certainly seems like the work of a more mature band, with years of experience and a diverse range of musical tastes behind them.

Or not. As a glance at the website reveals that they are all fifteen.

Now, we’re onto something interesting. What was already a pretty decent stab at an oft-ignored genre of music is turning out to be something pretty remarkable. Let’s think about this in more depth: how many fifteen-year-olds do you know that are playing a sort of modernised jazz-funk fusion, and doing it pretty damn well at that? How many young teens have you come across who seem to genuinely care about breaking genre boundaries and straying far away from the norm, in order to play the sort of music that they think matters?

Not only is Something Simple’s style rather pleasing, these guys are also fine instrument players. Every single member of the band contributes in a stylish and memorable fashion, while never sounding too showy or out of place. Generally speaking, Something Simple seem to know what they’re doing – and they clearly have the talent to pull it off.

Okay, so you could be pedantic and complain that the band isn’t always a hundred percent tight, or that the recording quality isn’t exactly perfect. But these things will come with experience. These guys are still young and, if their current material is anything to go by, they have serious potential.
