Layabouts- Savage Behavior

'Rock's Dead'; that's what Spanish riff-lovers Layabouts cry out from the opening track of latest album 'Savage Behavior'. Not sure about that, especially as this record clearly tries to keep the soul of this most beloved genre alive and kicking.

In a world which has seen The Black Keys make a welcomed commercial resurgence, Layabouts will surely be able to round up a fanbase. Whilst clearly less polished and perhaps 'classy' sounding than their aforementioned psychedelic counterparts, Layabouts still endeavour to capture that blues-rock vibe to their robustly groove-heavy sound. 'Chevy' surmises this parallel, boasting smatterings of organ alongside the sleaze of BRMC-style sonic batterings. It's one of the strongest tracks of the record that allows the Spaniards to take a confident stance on their style of rock n' roll, narrowly followed by the rumbling bass and rockabilly vibe of 'Rollercoaster'. They also seem to have unlocked the ability for the catchy breed of riff... you know, the kind you could 'do-do-do' along to if partaking in an 'Intros Round' on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. 'To The End' demonstrates this impeccably.

In terms of overall impact and flavour, it sounds thoroughly American and straight from the most bourbon-stinking dark corners of the South. It's a bit QOTSA in it's rhythmic intentions, but also gives a little nod to the anthemic rebellion of eras gone by. An indie rock record with a shades-sporting hangover.
