A Limp Affair

I have to admit to being hugely disappointed by this record; Christiaan Webb's work with The Webb Brothers was at least fun, with those psych-rock elements to their indie tunes they had a sunshine groove you couldn't help dancing to; this solo album from Christiaan however is close to easy listening at times, with sweet (but retro sounding) well-trodden melodies bringing to mind artists like Squeeze, Elton John and George Harrison and there's little variation, so the record gets quite samey after a few tracks making it an uninspiring and limp affair overall.

It pains me to say that this record didn't make an impression, not only because it was recorded in my home town, Cardiff (where the Webb Brothers made many friends on their touring schedule over the years), and employing the use of local talent as backing (not least the excellent Steve Black of Sweet Baboo fame) but also because the album was written after Christiaan has had some sort of spiritual epiphany in his life, and believes in these songs, so you feel like you should be as enthused as him.

On the plus side, you can often hear his passion in the tracks which goes a long way towards injecting some interest - more upbeat tunes like It's All Over Now give him a chance to project a bit more, showing he can still rock at least a little, but still there's not enough oomph for this reviewer to create a connection with the music unfortunately.
