True Nature Unfolds...

Cult of Luna clones I hear you say? Sure they may sound a tad like them, but Callisto, in fact, are ten times better! The album does not get boring at all- every track is fun, exciting and very intriguing to listen to and very few albums do this these days. The opening track, 'Black hole' is amazing. It captures all the essences of experimental metal and more. The second track entitled 'Limb. Diasporas' seems like a normal track until the end, until... what is this? Melodic Female vocals? Unheard of in this kind of music usually, but the thing is, it actually sits well with the music...Perhaps Callisto should use female vocals more often...

There are mixtures of many fine bands in this album such as Isis, Cult of Luna and more. 'Blackhole', 'Storm' and 'Masonic' definitely contain traces of Cult of Luna, this is shown by the guitar sound. These tracks could even be placed on Cult of Luna's last effort - you wouldn't know it was by Callisto. 'Worlds Collide' definitely sounds influenced by Isis, you can certainly pick it up from the drone and dirge-like guitars in this song (No, I mean dirge in a good way).

The sound on this album is almost perfect. One thing that almost certainly deserves a mention are the vocals from Markus Myllykangas, his tone of growl certainly suits this album, and he never shows signs of having trouble holding his voice and he never sounds out of breath. Guitarists Henri Kuittinen and Johannes Nygard and Markus make up a fantastic guitar trio, mixing simple metal with complex chords, almost progressive metal, if you will.

Callisto have recently been supporting High On Fire on their UK tour, so it is nice to see the lads get some promotion over here. I am sure this band will achieve a lot as they have only just released their first album and already they are on Earache, a major metal label and I'm certain they will go far.

If this is a debut effort then Callisto's future releases should be purely amazing, assuming that they are still together in five years- but I am sure they will be. True Nature Unfolds looks to be a release that will be remember for years to come, one of the best albums of the year so far and one I will definitely have in my stereo for a long time. A certain future classic from the Scandinavian metallers.
