Funeral Diner terrorize the streets with their debut full-length 'The Underdark'

From the ashes of Portraits of Past and Nexus Six comes Screamo band 'Funeral Diner', a band that have a ton of gigs under their belt and toured all over the place like Europe, Japan and the majority of North America. After recording numerous EP's and demos, the band have finally finished recording their first album in three years called 'The Underdark' and set to unleash it upon the general public on the 29th of March.

With their concoction of subdued melody and chaotic structures, Funeral Diner's new album is more than just an album; it's an epic of anger and twisted obsession. Although the album is only 8 tracks long, each song lasts for at least a good 3 minutes. Their sound is best described as any indie kid's dystopic nightmare. Guitars fully abused, vocals shredded up and drum skins that have been raped to death.

The way in which the album has been structured is something that is quite original. The eighth track has an introduction piece named 'Decline' where the band play a soft instrumental part and then hit straight into 'Collapsing', a complete contrast to the previous track. The band also likes to link their songs together using riffs to follow on from one track to another. A prime example of this is the link between quickest track 'What was said' to 'Regardless We Fall', the band use the same riff on the outro of the former to begin the latter song. This may sound quite simple to achieve but it's made very effective by the way in which the album has been produced.

Although the band have used various devices within their album to give more flavour to their sound, it seems 'The Underdark' does drag on a bit leaving you a bit depressed after thoroughly listening to the album. I personally couldn't listen to this album repeatedly and find it uplifting and fun due to the way it's so emotionally encrypted. I certainly know of a lot of people who would enjoy listening to this non-generic version of an experimental Deftones (if that is possible) but for the average metal fan, it would be quite hard to appreciate.

This is certainly one of the best 'screamo' releases I've heard all year and I know that fans of Funeral Diner will not be disappointed with their latest release. Don't miss out on these guys when they play a show near you.
