Soberskin are the new sound of indie.
Describing themselves as an "electro-indie" band, I knew that Soberskin would be quite unlike any other band I could think of.
Indeed as the song started, I thought even their own description to be inaccurate, as all I could hear was acid-house/trance music. So, this is the electro bit - I guess the indie doesn't arrive until the guitars and vocals kick in. Not being able to imagine quite how this marriage of genres will work, I myself am astounded by the fact that Soberskin really manage to pull it off. The juxtaposition of these very different music scenes actually works rather well.
I really like this guy's voice and it tops off this already unique sound. Ironically as they sing "I am the prototype, you are the second generation" I can't help but think that they sound like Depeche Mode's offspring or even a much tamed Pop Will Eat Itself.
More of an interesting band to listen to, I like what Soberskin are doing but honestly can't see them having mass appeal. But what a pleasure it is to hear something really different. Especially since the resurgance of the guitar band, where so many groups end up sounding like a re-hash of the same song.
The moodiness that accompanies all indie bands is only enhanced by the trancey-dancey beats affording the track a very dark edge. I am truly blown away to hear something so individual!
