James Yorkston and The Athletes - Surf Song
Who is James Yorkston? This young man is seen as the next sensation coming straight from Scotland. On this single the artist is joined by the Athletes, a band he played with several times in different pubs around Scotland.
Putting him in a particular genre is almost impossible. It is a mix of acoustic pop with some bluesy/indie sound.
His original voice does not do the trick. After listening to 'Surf Song' and 'Song to the Siren' (a Tim Buckley cover version) you are a bit lost not really knowing what to think. The second track sounds exactly like the first one with almost the same melody but with different lyrics. It just seems that the choice of the single has been done awkwardly.
I was not impressed by those tracks, dare I say even bored? But still there is something that makes you want to discover more of his music.
