Heartbreak Engines give us a 2nd dose of 80's influenced punk

As we hit the turning point of the decade, the punk scene is facing a new direction. Bands such as The Horrorpops, Nekromatix and Madsin are getting more attention from the media for their outstanding physical appearance and psychedelic punk music. This month sees another one of these psycho-punk bands release another full-length, this time it's The Heartbreak Engines with a follow-up to 'Good Drinks, Good Butts, Good Fellows', an underground success during 2003.

'Love Murder Blues' is 11 track shots of clean-shaven punk, psychobilly and dumpster rock n'roll. Consisting of passionate singing from frontman Lou, traditional guitar solo madness and some groovy double bass-lines. The band has an interesting way of piecing together their album. Some songs such as 'Nightfall' have a romantic, stand-up sound, but put skip on a couple of tracks to 'Along The River' and you're re-united with that street-siren sound your waiting for.

Regardless of what the band are playing, vocalist Lou manages to retain his enthusiastically unique voice and due to his style, it's hard for any listener to become irritated by him. In fact the differing music the band play doesn't just limit his voice to one tone but tends to explore Lou's outstanding voice. Whether it's 'Heartbreak Forever' where Lou's shouting with his gravel-toned voice or 'Haunting Love' where Lou's whispers sends shivers down your spine.

Lou isn't the only ecstatic member of the band, the band's musicianship is also exciting and entertaining; the drumming has a meaty sound that is hardly ever captured on other band's studio recordings. The double-bass is another exciting feature of this band, some great bass riffs in the songs easily show up the rest of the band.

This CD is certainly something most punk fans will enjoy, it's the kind of release that you'll either love or hate and there is no compromise. It's very pop-friendly in places, which may put off some listeners but for those for love their 80's rock and today's underground psychobilly bands then Heartbreak Engines are for you!
