Typing Error Reveals a Lighthearted Band

'Dawn Addict' is the debut album release from sleazy, Goth-shock rockers Crack Ov Dawn. Citing influences from bands such as Motley Crue and Marilyn Manson, this Parisian group are going down a storm in France.

Joey Jordison of Slipknot and Murderdolls fame has apparently been raving about this band. I suspect that this is probably because they sound in style very similar to the Murderdolls, and like their somewhat questionable cover of Billy Idol's White Wedding, Crack ov Dawn also have to a cover version to show you, in the form of U2's Pride. I mention this track first because I have issues with bands covering already perfect songs. They never better the original so what is the point? This cover version certainly doesn't even come close to Bono and Co.'s rendition, but it appears to be harmless acting more of homage to the song than a serious reworking of it.

I do believe that Crack ov Dawn have the potential to become quite successful if they get the chance. The rest of the album consists of shock-pop tracks, highlights include opening track 'Porn Junkie', 'Fix You to Death' and 'Red Light Clubber'. Most of the tracks are very similar in tone and pace; they are all sleazy dirty up-tempo rock tunes. This is a band that echoes the sounds of Marilyn Manson's 'Antichrist Superstar' album and the Murderdolls' 'Dead In Hollywood' track.

I actually really like the track 'Popular Queen' which stands out a little more from the others, more harmonious in sound and incredibly infectious. In fact as far as the music goes, I don't really have any complaints, apart from the fact they sound a little too similar to the Murderdolls. The last track of the album 'Miss Suicide' is also a great track; it sounds like it was lifted straight off Marilyn Manson's 'Mechanical Animals' album.

Crack ov Dawn are most definitely not a band to be taken seriously though. The band members look as though they have read a book, 'How to annoy your parents'. Step one; shave off your eyebrows, followed by smearing greasy lipstick across your face. The lyrics are questionable too. They seem to be only concerned with drugs and sex, and some of them are downright silly. For example these little gems crop up 'Drugs are fun and I don't care', and 'Hello ya horny pale bitch don't you wanna be my witch?'

Crack ov Dawn strike me as a band to have fun with, enjoy their tongue in cheek sleazy Glam rock but don't expect anything deep and meaningful from them. Oh and boys, don't let your girlfriends near them.

'Dawn Addict' is released on 29th August 2005 via Equilibre Music.
