Beauty Queen

The press-release that accompanied this single said that Drill Queen had only done one gig to date. One gig and a single and album on the way... some bands have all the luck!

This band however are doing something truly original. To look at the single cover, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was an R & B album. For the photographs of this buff black woman in hot pants lacing up her high-heeled Chuck Taylors, has a definate air of "bling" around her. But this couldn't be further from the truth.

This Haitian belle is vocalist, Vee and boy does she have a pair of lungs on her! She sings in an almost morose manner during "Born Depressed". This marries well with the dirgy bass and guitar until the chorus kicks in, where she just wails. Actually, her voice isn't dissimilar to Skin from Skunk Anansie which is great! A big voice is needed to compliment the massive rhythm section. This is punk-pop with a hip-hop edge. Something that is even more apparent on the B-side "Pocket Full Of Fun", perhaps the easier to listen to of the two tracks, with the scratchin' thrown in and the Adam's Family style break.

This is fun music and both are great songs. One gig and Drill Queen have fimly established themselves as a band you should be listening to.
