Bigger doesn't always mean better
Cor! Sheffield and the surrounding area are producing some blinding bands at the minute and here's another one to add to a list that already includes The Arctic Monkeys, The Long Blondes and Bromhead's Jacket - Little Man Tate. Debut single "The Agent" is 3 minutes and 40 seconds of fizzing garage pop that careers along with the kind of enthusiasm displayed by a toddler after one too many cans of Irn Bru. "Here we go again" wired up vocalist Jon croons in a Morrissey-esque manner on "The Agent" while his bandmates create the kind of fantastic mod-ish racket that is bound to seduce even the most cynical garage rock fan (and let's face it there's plenty of them).
The jangly "Just Can't Take It" is the reflective flip-side and quite possibly the only song ever released that's about "drunken flirty texts and shagging in the rain". It's the more prosaic of the two tracks on offer and owes no small debt to The Smiths in their rockabilly influenced pomp circa "Meat Is Murder". If Little Man Tate can continue to produce such finely crafted songs who knows how far they can go. As debut singles go this is certainly a cracking statement of intent, make no mistake.
