A Varied And Exciting Listen

After teasing us earlier this year with the single 'Polly-o' I know some of you have been eagerly awaiting the debut album from The Mules. And here it is, after three years together Oxford quintet The Mules release their debut album 'Save Your Face'.

It's hard to describe The Mules' sound, I don't really think they fit easily into one genre. 'Misprint' and 'Straight A's vs Drills' sounds like Madness given a modern day twist and a touch of their own flare. While 'Tule Luke' is a happy, bouncy, sing-a-long kind of song, which you'd see people dancing like maniacs to at the weekend.

The band playfully mix elements of punk, skittle, country, and folk; this is certainly is not a dull listen, and has more twists and turns than a roller coaster. But just when you think The Mules are a comedy band, you hear 'Live Feed' which could very well be mistaken for a song by Mercury Music Award nominee Richard Hawley. The album ends on a high with 'Ham Shank' that brings the album to a honky-tonk piano and screeching guitar climax.

The Mules are one of the few bands that have managed to create a unique sound, and what's more they have managed to create a unique sound that's also a good listen. 'Save Your Face' is definitely worth a listen.
