Ooh la la!
LA based quartet The Oohlas first foray into the UK market comes in the tentative shape of a debut 7" single (how quaint) on Stolen Transmission Records. Sure 'Small Parts' harks back to the glory years of Weezer and Veruca Salt (a fact acknowledged in their press release) but give me both over Fall Out Boy any day of the week (I like nineties alt-rock so sue me!).
Vocalist Olivia Stone's kitten-ish delivery places this single way above the ordinary and former Everclear drummer Greg Eklund's guitar work betrays a scarcely hidden appreciation for shoegaze. Flip-side 'From Me To You' is rather underwhelming by contrast though and is dragged down considerably by a none more pedestrian vocal performance from Eklund. Provided the band can deliver more songs like the 'A' side and less like the latter they should have no trouble in finding an audience for their zippy, hook laden tunes. A self produced album – 'Best Stop Pop' – is due in the early summer.
