Goth metal theatre

Hello and welcome to musical cookery, today we will be creating a spicy dish called 'Powerwolf'.

First prepare your ingredients, you will need some Iron Maiden, a pinch of Judas Priest, lots of theatre, a cup full of Goth, a bucket of make-up and a good sprinkling of cheese. Mix it carefully to bring out the flavour and bake for a long time. Half-baked will just not do. Serve in a bowl shaped like a metal spiked leather gauntlet for the full effect. Your guests will be open mouthed with the results.

Powerwolf are from Romania and play the most theatrical, overblown metal I have heard for a long time, it's great. Full of lyrics like "Heavy metal! In the night" and "Through the night" and "In the night" and "In the night" oh I'm repeating myself, maybe that's because it seemed like every song had a line like that in it.

It also has fantastic song titles, just look down to the bottom of the review. I played this in my car as I tend to do and didn't read the song listing first, my cd player shows the song titles and up pops 'Mother Mary is a bird' as there wasn't room to display anything more. I almost crashed laughing so hard, mind you I also nearly crashed giving it the old devil horns at passing motorists, headbanging and pumping my fist on the steering wheel.

Powerwolf have a singer with a huge theatrical voice in the shape of Attila Dorn (yes Attila) some very cool guitarists who have boned up on their Judas Priest riff catalogue and a trip hammer accurate drummer. They also have a keyboardist that has set his keys to Church organ and left them there.

The songs are nearly all anthems that are impossible to ignore, sometimes they made me smile and sometimes they made me laugh out loud they are so preposterous, but blimey they're good, special mention goes to 'Behind the Leathermask', 'In Blood we trust' and 'We take from the living' please don't let me find out these guys are serious that would spoil it, musically they are obviously the real deal but it seems to have such a tongue in cheek seriousness about it you can't help but be carried along.

A must buy for all fans of Priest, bonkers anthemic goth rock, power metal and singing very loudly in your car. Check out their pictures on their website.
