Little soul?

Unashamedly retro in tone "Pay To Join" the new single from perennial also-rans Little Barrie parties like it's 1967 not 2007. Fortunately for the current faces of top mod store Merc this reviewer is prepared to indulge their highly derivative sound but only because they manage to pull the whole darn thing off with such stylish aplomb.

Modish types will lap this up no doubt but it's unlikely to sway the casual listener and maybe that's the point with Little Barrie. This single may not be revolutionary but you can sure as hell dance to it and that's more than you can say for most of the singles released this month. Any band that can harness the soul power of Weller at his peak will always attract a cult following and on the basis of this single (the second to be taken from "Stand Your Ground") they seem destined to that fate. Whether the band are satisfied with the bit-part role is another question entirely.
