Yet another electro new kid.

Jape is a great word isn't it? Its very sound accurately describes the sense of fun and enjoyment that is hopefully conveyed in its meaning and it isn't used often enough in modern language. One man hoping to bring the word, if not that meaning, to a wider audience is Jap, an Irish act whose debut single 'Floating' seems stuck in the middle of the electronic wave that is happening these days.

For all that the track is very now, it has some old styles coursing through it. There is a bluesy feel to the jaggy background that plays under the vocals and theres the feel of Indian influence, with the hint of a sitar hovering over the music. Lyrically, its another short meandering and tribute to young life, drug-taking and all the real-life stuff that happens along the way.

With this song appearing on Adam Freelands 'Back To Mine' mix (admittedly, record company connections may have enabled this as much as the quality of the song), theres every chance that Jape could be heading the way of mainstream break over but on the basis of this track, it's a bit too obscure for that market. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song and for this writer, all the better for lacking the blatant commercialism that some acts have, but its unlikely to be bothering the heavy repeat play list at the major radio stations just yet, which just means you'll have to track the song down.
