Dont fear the truth.
The music of 'The Overly Dramatic Truth' starts off extremely impressive but when the vocals kick in, it takes a few listens to get into the swing of things. Being unaware of what to expect, the hip-hop rap vocals were not what was the first thought to roll over the atmospheric beats and frenetic drum loops that heralded the vocals. The rhythm and pacing of El-Ps delivery builds throughout the track and there tension and aggression coming to the fore long before the track is done. Its hard to imagine where this song will crop up as it crosses many styles and genres and is likely to slip into the cracks where innovation sometimes resides but its a very likeable single.
The handful of remixes make the single worth buying with the dub-like intro and then two-step beat of 'EMG' greatly appealing, theres even an instrumental mix if thats more your thing. With 8 tracks available in total, thats more than counts for an album for some acts so if its value for money that floats your boat, theres another cracking reason to check this out.
Rap can be viewed with distrust and suspicion by many people nowadays when they dont give it a proper chance but on this showing, El-P may be well worth diffing out.
