Ross Copperman – Welcome to Reality
It's a Sunday morning, 7:00am, and 20 minutes outside Peterborough. Its too early to get out of bed so the curtains are opened and on goes 'Welcome to reality', the debut album from Ross Copperman. It turns out this is the perfect way to begin the day. The album has everything you want to hear from a soft rock artist. The singles that have been released 'All she wrote' and 'Found you' were just a sample of the talent that Ross Copperman has to offer. As proved by these tracks, Copperman has the musical, vocal and lyrical ability to satisfy listeners all in various moods.
In terms of lyrical content, this is to be honest a typical love album about romance, finding love (All She Wrote), falling in love (Found You), falling for the wrong person (Guilty Pleasures) and of course losing the love of your life and its effects on you (Shout). The lyrics on the track 'Can't stop loving you' are amongst the best on the album; 'so when I stop thinking about forever/that's when I start thinking about you/coz I cant picture one day in my life without you/you know its true/cant stop loving you.' This tune has a very catchy chorus and you can't help but want to sing along to. Usually on an album you have the odd track where the vocals are a little out of tune to the beat, or an individuals vocals sound better on one style of music, ballad, better than another. The vocals are amazing throughout this album, and spot on in every point.
'Welcome to Reality' has ballads such as 'Found you' and 'Fly away,' or if you prefer, more upbeat tunes like 'As I Choke.' The upbeat ballad 'I don't wanna let you go' explodes into a full-blown climax of sounds. With 'I get by' you may be dubbed into thinking this is a ballad, as even though the verses are quiet calm the chorus is upbeat and pure pop rock. At one point the track goes electric with a guitar solo. 'As I Choke' is another electric track, where the musical talent and ability of Copperman particularly stands out. 'Guilty Pleasures,' is a cheeky little number with the beginning laugh, and added repetitive beat.
'Welcome to Reality' is no typical pop or rock album in terms of sound; combine the two and that is the sound you have. Everyday instruments are used, guitar, bass and drums, also violins on 'Fly Away,' but the main focus for most of the tracks is the piano. Played by Copperman, this artist knows how to get the teenage girls falling head over heels. The smooth calming violin opening of 'Believe' get a listener wondering if it is the same track when piano kicks; but the guitar solo makes the track complete. Watch out not to tune off after the last track as there is a hidden ballad with more great sounds, with more of a classical piano; you'll love it...just as you will the rest of the album.
