Now packing A-Levels with the hooks.

It seems that 2008 is going to be the year of intelligent geek/rock, with bands no longer afraid to reveal their high levels of education or understanding. Whether this transpires to be true is up to the listener but what I can reveal from hearing Lightspeed Champion's “Tell Me What It's Worth” is that if the new breed doesn't take over or at least mix it up, then it's going to be a real waste of genuine talent.

“Tell Me What It's Worth” is a blissful, minimalist lament in the questioning of existence. This sounds like pretentious tat but, as is established in the opening seconds is that this has its roots firmly in pop. There are hooks at every corner that match the basic (but not at all lo-fi) production beautifully and the lyrics make you think without being pretentious. In essence, it's everything that a single should be all about. This will stop you in you tracks and hold your attention throughout while giving you that wonderful feeling that you have not heard this kind of thing before. If “Tell Me What It's Worth” is an indication into what we can look forward to in this new breed of indie then we are all in for a treat.
