The Dodos - 'Red And Purple'

In San Francisco, psychedelia seems to grow on trees, blooming in bulbous, luridly multi-coloured clumps (obviously). The latest pick of the crop is The Dodos, a folk duo (trio as of recently) who balance the obligatory acoustic guitar with a very enthusiastic injection of drumming.

Single ‘Red and Purple’ from their recently released second album ‘Visiter’ is a case in point, drummer Logan Kroeber providing propulsive lift to Meric Long’s mildly cryptic song-writing (‘there’s nobody here / so tell us a joke / they tear off our ears / the fire that we stoked’… quite so).

The release is a bit light on the trimmings, simply consisting of two near identical versions of the song, the album version and a radio cut. While this means the single probably isn’t worth the trouble (who actually * buys * singles anymore anyway?), The Dodos certainly are. Go straight to the source and check out ‘Visiter’.
