Charming Electro Indie

There is something charmingly 80’s about the way The Semifinalists synth pop ‘Last Pretending’ opens. It’s all wonderfully instrumentally reminiscent of the likes of, Soft Cell, Flock of Seagulls and Art Of Noise but all in the best possible way. In fact not since the short lived but blissfully brilliant Long Island electro outfit My Favourite released ‘The Happiest Days Of Our lives’ has a group of this genre worn its influences on its sleeves so convincingly.

Lyrically emotive and vocally coy The Semifinalists music seeks to charm rather than bludgeon the listener into loving them and as a result it’s hard not to like the music these guys are making.

Doubtless it’ll be a little too sugary and sweet for some but for the most part this is as decent a summer single as you’ll likely get and offers plenty to established electro pop fans despite the obvious nostalgic references.
