Sexy Lounge Synth
Here we go . . . Portishead are back for two minutes and all the clones hidden away come spilling out the wood work. Unfair? Totally. Sure Papa La Bas are very similar to the misanthropic trip hop titans but that should in no way take away from what is actually a more than competent single.
Comprised of Dwyx (nope no idea how that’s pronounced either) and Siobhan the duo could well be onto a winner with this sexy, dark little number. Siobahn’s sultry singing voice is as accomplished as you’ll find and settles perfectly into the flow of the electronic lounge instrumentals of ‘I’ll Come around’. Oddly though ‘Middle Lane’ the B-side is a far more accomplished effort than the actual title track. It’s brooding intensity and menacing tone seems to suit the talents of both members perfectly and as such it appears odd it isn’t the focus of the two tracks. Not to worry though as both are pretty impressive works on most counts.
Indeed bearing in mind how hard it is to do this kind of music well, there really isn’t much to criticise about what’s on offer. Yet something small enough not to be able to pinpoint but big enough to make the difference is missing here and as a result it just falls short on being an un-missable addition to your music collection.
