Part-Time Entertainment?

‘Part-Time Entertainment’ is the debut self-produced album from Ontario quintet Re-wind and is the result of two pain-staking years of heavy song writing and recording.

When you hear that a band prides themselves on a unique and innovative sound you get excited and rather caught up in enjoying something new. Admittedly there is something that stands out o this album, something you don’t hear too often but cant place a finger on, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying the album is at all unique or pioneering in any way, its just a good listen.

The album does however start on a good note with ‘Beautiful’, a song never been more literal to its name. It has methods of persuading visions of dancing in the sunshine and laughing in the raindrops flowing through as vocals from Taylor Kaye soar away. Just as some songs have the ability to implement visions into their songs and across to an audience, others are able to express emotions to listeners. ‘I.O.U Nothing’ for example expresses a whole lot of attitude. Not only do you hear this through the music but also in the vocals and the lyrics such as ‘I wanna knock that smirk right off your face’.

The majority of the songs on this release are in the upbeat category. ‘I Believed It’ is upbeat yet reserved, ‘Make Me’ has some solid guitar riffs, ‘One More Day’ has an Alanis Morissette style while ‘This Time’ outdoes all other upbeat tunes its modern rock basis. No album would be complete with a couple of slower tunes. There are ballads such as the piano lead ‘What You Feel’ which stands out when surrounded by a mass of more upbeat songs and rises to high levels of uplifting beats and touching tones. ‘The One’ has an inner intensity that pushes through the melodious styling of the song.

Then there are others that range between both sides. ‘When’ is a rather varied due to there being acoustic guitars supplying a gentle melody while the chorus explodes with power and passion and ‘Had Your Fun’ goes from gentle solitude moments to rather crowded areas, while remaining expressive.

There is nothing breathtaking about this album but it occupies an hour of my time.
