Scream Shout Say Nothing

It's surprising that debut record ‘The Animals Still Run This City’ from Scream Shout Say Nothing runs for well over half an hour - considering it's only five tracks long. After my first listen it was obvious that the band have the “scream” and “shout” part of the name down so I was curious as to whether they were going to attempt the next part of the name.

From the opening of ‘When It All Goes Dark The Animals Still Run This City’ a hard-core rock sensation is overabundant and steals the listener away from the backing vocals that are actually quite insightful. Then there are the strong guitar riffs pounding through ‘Fulfil The Roles Boys…Fulfil The Roles’ which is slightly more apprehensive than the opener and gives the band a two minute shot at the “say nothing” part of the band name at the start.

As ‘Einstein I Ain’t’ takes a softer opening, the anxieties over the outcome began to unnerve me and for all the right reasons. With the melodic bass lines suddenly coming to a stop, the track became a mass of screeching and nothing much more than aggression. If the band were ever going to shoot for a ballad style tune it would have been ‘The River’. The vocals may still have hostility but the song started, at least, with a much calmer effect; it's just a shame that it dissipates. As the concluding track ‘Gimme Inner Peace Or I’ll Mop The Floor With Ya’ breaks the speakers I came to the conclusion that aggression and hostility are not the sort of tones I want in the music I listen to, even when it is masked under softer vocals.
