Original indie-rock from Canadian newcomers

Think of Canada and music, and you could soon be thinking of hotly-tipped newcomers The Coast before long. Which is definitely a good thing. Their low-key brand of relaxed indie-rock isn’t a million miles from acoustic artists like Newton Faulker in their quieter moments. It’s difficult to draw comparisons, because this is obviously a band effort, more low-key than Coldplay (these days), but with a raw edge closer to Kaiser Chiefs or Elbow.

'Killing Off Our Friends' is a compelling, track but nothing too unusual considering it’s an obvious single. 'Nueva York' is more interesting starting off low and piano-driven, it rises into a edgy crescendo of noise, all fuzzy guitars and echoey switching between loud and soft. By 'The Lines Are Cut' you know more what to expect: echoed vocals, sustained guitar, and driving drumbeats. It’s not a formula that gets tired easily, but they’ll have to make sure they don’t get stuck in a rut with singles. 'Tight Rope' is completely beat-driven and proves that The Coast aren’t going to let themselves fall into the same old formulas easily. Gone is the softer indie and in with the edgier rock beats. It’s their most off-beat track here, all memorable chorus but oddly clashing verses.

Watch out for these guys in the future, especially the album in January.
