Crisp's debut

Dan Crisp is the newest face to come from the West Country with the release of his debut album ‘Far From Here’. This 24-year-old singer/songwriter creates tunes that are quite unique in style.

What first began as a concept, tales of key events in the life of a fictional male character from birth to death, soon wilted due to the difficulty of keeping to one theme. In the end, the album turned into songs tackling topics such as rebellion, love, life, winning and losing and the where you stand in the world. When writing, he uses his own experiences and those of people around him as inspiration.

What has been created with these twelve tunes are acoustic melodies, some with semi-English folk segments but all in a modern setting with a rock edge. The first taste of the folk aspects of this young talented musician make an appearance in ‘I Could Love Someone’ where the string segments become powerfully dominant.

As ‘Poor Man Richer’ makes an entrance, make way for the rockier edge. The basic acoustic setting still has its vibes but there is a harder electric guitar presence. The song never travels too far from the basics of the album and enters passionate rock, which is a good thing. Even the acoustic 'Beautiful and Deadly’ has a rockier edge in its simplicity.

‘Hollywood’ is the opener on this release and sets the scene for the forthcoming tracks incredibly well. Its gentle pace, strong piano presence and basic guitar makes the perfect introductory tune. The albums title track is one that paints quite a picture in the mind of a listener, a sense of desperation and a painful heart.

The vocals that Dan Crisp possesses are distinctive and suit the music perfectly. Whether he is attempting the gentle acoustic based songs, folk numbers or something rockier, the lad is able to roll along.

‘Far From Here’ is a wonderful album with each song paying attention to something different, folk music, deeper rock, acoustic rock or simple rhythms.
