Impressive Quirk Rock
Spring Offensive have a quirky, jagged edge to their rhythms and warbled but assured vocal delivery that makes them interesting, however, as you listen on you also uncover very solid guitar work and memorable melodies that hook you in. This is an impressive EP, the tunes are catchy and emotive with some really beautiful moments, the overall sound is expansive and the jerky stop/start approach makes your heart beat faster as you try to anticipate where it will go next.
EP opener, ‘A Let Down’ is brilliant; at first it feels a touch Bloc Party but this comparison is fleeting as this band have far more to offer than cheap comparisons. As the off kilter but infectious and danceable tune continues you are treated to an emotional and touching vocal performance and a stunning climax of fuzzy, swirling heaviness, lovely. ‘Between One And One-Nine-Four’ immediately demands you move your feet, the harmonies are heady and uplifting, a perfect dance-rock tune; anthemic and powerful stuff. ‘The Cable Routine’ has a more gentle and minimal beginning but background echoes and whispered harmonies promise more; it soon delivers with another fantastic melody, great bass line and a clever structure. Ones to watch.
