The energetic five-piece introduce themselves with their debut EP
As the group claim on their Myspace page; “it's only a matter of time before you have heard the name Charlie Indestructible”. Hearing the band’s name is one thing, but it is down to their debut EP, ‘My Sweet Revenge’ to ensure that people actually remember the name of the rising alternative rockers Charlie Indestructible.
The quintet from Bedfordshire begin their debut record with ‘Step One is Establishment Step Two is Sabotage’. The harmonies between vocalist Mark Sowden and guitarist/vocalist Jon Morris blend well, rising above the tight but relatively unadventurous rhythmic foundations of the band. Although there seem to be traces of heavier musical influences, an overriding sense of powerpop seems to prevail, placing them amongst a plethora of similar aspiring artists.
As the EP enlivens with the second track, ‘I’m Back Billy and I Want You’, new dimensions of the band’s music refreshingly begin to emerge. The song has also clearly been written with anthemic qualities, which should be particularly pleasing to members of the target audience. Rounding off their debut with the title track ‘My Sweet Revenge’, Charlie Indestructible continue to pursue a heavier sound, having evolved with traits of the screamo genre. Encouragingly, the band’s heavier efforts still manage to effortlessly incorporate the melodic vocal harmonies that shone during the opening track of the EP.
Although only having formed in 2009, Charlie Indestructible are already displaying signs of promise, despite lacking any real sense of innovation. The next logical step seems to be the release of an LP, which, if paired with a string of UK tour dates, could really boost the popularity of this escalating band.
