Album Review - Aquabats - Hi-Five Soup!

If there were ever to be an album that was going to entertain the likes of everyone due to its comical sense of being, it would be the fifth studio album by the Aquabats! These guys are best known for claiming to be superheroes on a quest to save the world from evil and do so through music. Due to this mythology, the band have adapted a certain style and uniqueness throughout the music that they are creating which is evident on their new twelve track release 'Hi-Five Soup'.

The lyrics written for these songs are comical, the type to dwell over as they play on the mind and cause the occasional grin to peak out of the corner of ones mouth. 'BFF' is one example of the talented lyrical content that can be achieved. Written as a type of schoolyard chant it states "the chipmunks are our little friends so don't step on them" as the track discusses the benefits of big friends forever. There are many more peculiar lines to contemplate over as well as the odd amusing theme such as self explanatory 'Food Fight On The Moon'.

As well as lyrically, the songs also stand out vocally, as each has something special, unique and never heard before. The opening tune for example 'Sharkfighter' has a slightly classical touch at times while others have some harmonising chants or a slight Rap effect. The concluding number on this release provides us with one of the albums mellower songs, gentle and calm. There are also mid placed songs, such as 'In My Dreams' driven by synth and guitar yet remains a chill out track and also upbeat and slightly rockier tunes.

After a few listens it is obvious the lads don't take themselves too seriously, creating tracks to enjoy and laugh at about ridiculous themes. Although this music isn't driven by emotion a great deal, it remains enjoyable and good for a laugh.
