Folks - Skull & Bones

Manchester band the Folks have spent much of this year working on their debut album I See Cathedrals and new single Skull and Bones is our first glimpse at what they've been up to. Last year the band toured with Miles Kane and Noel Gallagher and there certainly is some connection between them and Gallagher. Like all good Manchester bands they are aware of their hometown's past and there is definitely a hint of psychedelia, with heavy Beatles overtones.

Skull and Bones is an energetic single that brings old style rock and roll to the modern world and it does this by bringing a rock beat to a 60's tune. There is real energy and pace to the song and it draws comparison to Queens of the Stone Age in the vocal style and pace.

It's so difficult to predict chart-topping hits in the modern age as an ocean of good musical talent surrounds us. But if I were a betting man I'd put a few pound on this band making it to the big time. They have already had XFM airplay and BBC Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw has been promoting them through twitter and if they do make it, it'll be of the strength of this song. It is a fantastic track and could hold its own in the charts in the months to come.
