Swedish trio The Duskfall pull out the goods for their latest release
If it's from Sweden, if it's a melodic death metal band and if it has already released an already well received debut CD then you know well in advance that this will be a band you will enjoy. The Duskfall are such a band. Formed by guitarist Mikael Sandorf after the end of the well known death metal band Gates Of Ishtar and featuring a revolving door of different musicians (which usually is not a good sign.) The Duskfall provide very enjoyable no-frills metal.
Musically speaking The Duskfall borrow elements from several different metal genres to make their own melodic style that is harder to pigeonhole than most. Rest assured that if you like the best riffs of thrash metal, the brutality of death metal and even some of the melodies of power metal then there is probably something in "Lifetime Supply Of Guilt" that will appeal to you. In terms of the production values this album also succeeds, this is not surprising considering Daniel Bergstrand who has also worked with acts such as In Flames and Meshuggah has lended his production touches to this album producing a clear and enjoyable sound.
There are only a few minor criticisms to be levelled at this album and none of these will turn away a hardened genre fan of the sort of top notch metal The Duskfall create but might perhaps put off someone new to their style. The songs whilst not being too samey to a regular listener of this sort of music do not provide the variety needed to entrance a new listener and also lack the more accessibly hooks needed to bring in new fans which could lead to the album sounding rather esoteric to the unintiated ear.
Overall then this is a strong, interesting and enjoyable album for the most part and is certainly worth checking out by any fans of the heavier side of metal these days. It's not going to win The Duskfall mass popularity by any stretch of the imagination but it is certainly an album that deserves some recognition.
