Femme fatale
Vaguely glammy, slightly poppy and potentially rather good The Morenas new single 'My Violent Femme' gives the impression that there are bigger and better things to come from this Essex power trio. Paolo Morena's hysterically over the top vocals are excellent here and there's a real swaggering sense of purpose to this single but alas there's also a lack of finesse and attention to melodic detail that crucially scuppers the band's ambitious FM rock.
In a roundabout way I'm trying to say that a) slap bass should be outlawed and b) The Morenas should consider writing the odd anthemic chorus. They're certainly capable of better things and the evidence is here but alas it's tucked away as an extra track. 'Coming Home' endeavours to sound like a more modern, mid-period Suede rocker and although it doesn't quite scale the pop peaks of Brett and co.'s finest material it's catchier and sexier than its less charming 'A' side sister.
