A Lush Melody

From a euphoric gospel chant through to twinkling bells, which are clearly a warm up for their Christmas hit, even in its introduction 'Bones' is striving to be epic; an ambition which it comes so close to meeting. Despite its grand brass, choral interventions and Brandon Flowers' edgy, hyperbolic vocals; 'Bones' fails to hone all these styles into something clear-cut enough to be catchy; there are so many fantastic styles and hooks that the true melody seems a little diluted. It's a little like the effect a theme park has on a small child; there's just so much to hear that you'll end up describing the day as "great", but not being able to clarify why. In any case, it's a relief to hear The Killers' searching for new styles and instruments, rather than resting on a formula that clearly gained them fans.
