Bad spelling and good songwriting.
Lewis Denby began playing music whilst he was still in primary school and by the age of twelve was writing songs. At seventeen a self-released debut CD appeared and last July a full release EP, 'Lookout Posts and Telescopes'. The 'Threadbear / Vous' single is intended as a taster for Lewis' first full release album which will be revealed to the listening public later this year.
We have to hope that 'Threadbear' is titled with some sort of pun in mind and not due to a lack of English lessons, and in fact, when the music's this good it's easy to give the benefit of the doubt. Lewis' voice has a richness rarely heard outside of American singer-songwriters such as Rufus Wainwright, a voice that manages to hold its own without a backing of twinkly guitars or sentimental piano. 'Threadbear' builds from a stripped down delicacy into a wall of emotion, strong beats and words your lungs will cry out to sing along to; before slowing back down to .
'Vous' belongs to a darker mood, Mr. Denby's voice being hidden under electronically-generated beats at first and later becoming spoken words under what appears to be another electronically-generated effect. It isn't as well-crafted as 'Threadbear' and feels more like a B-side or album track than an A-side, double or not, but it doesn't bring down the previous track's magic. Lewis Denby's album promises to be an intriguing release.
