A great cover that stays true to the original

Having endured mixed fortunes since forming in 1996, long standing indie rockers Seafood return once again with a download-only covers of 'Lovesong' by The Cure and 'I'll Be Here In The Morning' by Townes Van Zandt. The band are currently writing new material for their new album, the follow-up to 2006's 'Paper Crown King', and the release of these covers coincide with the announcement of a UK tour taking place throughout May and June.

So, why cover these tracks in particular? In the words of singer and guitarist David Line, the band have "often been compared to The Cure and we thought Lovesong sounded like a Seafood song so it was the perfect choice to cover". Townes Van Zandt "has been a firm favourite" of the band's for many years, and they've been playing this particular track during their live set during the last few tours, "so it was time to get it recorded".

The result of 'Lovesong' stays faithful to the original on the whole, with the typical Cure-esque guitars infused with delay and phasing effects dominating the proceedings. This is particularly effective during the chorus, highlighting the lyrics "I will always love you" and creating a sense of grandeur. 'I'll Be Here In The Morning' is a gentle acoustic tune, with a percussion that gradually builds throughout the duration. In my opinion its not as strong as 'Lovesong', but makes for a pleasant b-side.

Having been a fan of the original 'Lovesong', I'm pleasantly surprised as to how faithful this version is to it. Seafood have kept the elements that characterise the song, with the addition of their own style and influence, in a very subtle way. Fans of The Cure and Seafood alike will enjoy this. This reviewer certainly did.
