Still Wrong but pretty good.
Delicate and beautiful are two words that you would think could only be taken as complimentary and being used to show a fondness or affection towards something. Well, as so often is the case when dealing with members of the fairer sex, it turns out those words can be taken as an insult, insinuating a weakness and an objectification of the person receiving the compliment. In all likeliness, it probably matters more who the words come from, as opposed to what the words meant that was the real deal-breaker. When they come from a well-meaning yet ultimately average-looking (at best) reviewer they're clearly going to pale into comparison when someone far beter looking offer up the same words. Thats all well and good you may be thinking but is there any reason why that rant appeared on a music review website and the answer to that is yes, it has a relevance to 'Still Wrong' by Marsha Swanson.
With an introduction that hints of Joni Mitchell's 'River', the single does have a stong feel of being beautiful and delicate. Swanson clearly lays her feelings and heart on the line in this single and when you couple that to a plaintive and simple piano backing, it all adds up to being a tearjerker. If you're after an upbeat or ass-kicking number then this isnt the place to be but Swansons vocal qualities melt throughout the song and even without an immediate chorus, the song manages to burrow its way into your mind.
A few changes in tempo later on in the song prevent it from becoming monotonous and indicate a level of songwriting above the average from Swanson. As discussed earlier, compliments and remarks can be taken in different ways and although this type of track isnt the usual fare this reviewer would choose to listen to, and no doubt Marsha Swanson would rather the thumbs up came from a reviewer from Mojo or Uncut, its a thumbs up nonetheless. If you're looking for a song to aid that broken heart, or you just like your songs to have a traditional feel and edge, 'Still Wrong' is very much right for you.
