‘Less Than Something’

Four Square open their album with 'Intro', a bland number that doesn’t appear to lead into anything particular, and lacking in the depth that it needs. Moving on into melodic punk mode with 'Please Don't Go', an upbeat number with good rhythm and catchy vocals which proves to be an improvement, but 'Waste Away' is a far stronger sound with waves of guitars that crash over you and vocals that hit and hook you, this, coupled with excellent percussion work is a far more satisfying number and the same can be said of 'Another Sleepless Night'.

Improving track by track, Four Square's 'Life Worth Living For' showcases their overall sound well with a mix of punk and power pop with vocals that are jumpy and individual in their sound. 'My Side' on the other hand has the band back into the ballad region, and the use of distorted vocals is what makes the number work in the beginning. There is something of The Beatles in this sound and the number works well through the vocal change over of styles. Something very 60's/70's is lurking at the heart of this song and it has to be the lighter waver number for live gigs.

It is a shame that 'Something Left To Loose' doesn't match up to the same standard. It tries to be too many things all at once and just ends up with a disjointed sound and feel to it. 'My Own Worst Disappointment' brings back a harder sound and faster pace. There is passion in the way this number is presented with excellent axe work crashing on you. A touch of the 70's sounds can be caught in 'Everything Bright' - Tightly played and well produced, but why the radio tuning for an ending?

Four Square have a sound that develops through the album, but it doesn't pack a knockout punch. Musically and vocally competent, and in places excellent, but a lighter sound overall.
