Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me
2008 is off to a cracking start for Gabriella Cilmi she was picked to perform the theme tune for Echo Beach, she has been on Later With Jools Holland and now her single ‘Sweet About Me’ looks set to be a hit.
The sixteen-year-old from Melbourne may claim that there’s nothing sweet about her, but when she’s being lined-up to be the next princess of pop her publicist may beg to differ. Her jangly pop song ‘Sweet About Me’ soon takes up residence in your head, and after a couple of listens you’ll find yourself attempting to sing along with the track in her bluesy style.
Her vocal tone is misleading, listening to her sing you’d expect to hear that type of voice coming out of someone much older which is no bad thing. Somehow, ‘Sweet About Me’ manages to be cool and retro and fresh and contemporary all at the same time. Cilmi also seems to be blessed with a hundred voices too, listening to the track you could be forgiven for thinking that it is by a group rather than a solo artist.
While both ‘Sweet About Me’ and ‘Echo Beach’ are great songs, for me it’s the third track on this single; ‘This Game’ that really stands out, it’s punchy and aggressive. Her attitude on here is way beyond her young years, and it’s a joy to listen to. Gabriella Cilmi has a very bright future ahead of her.
